Connect at Velo-city Dublin

By: Sue Knaup

The next annual Velo-city conference is fast approaching June 25-28 in Dublin, Ireland. This will be my eleventh Velo-city conference (my first was also in Dublin in 2005). I make a point of attending this one no matter which continent it falls on. It’s simply the best all-around cycling conference, bringing together top advocates, designers, academics, and officials and offering topnotch sessions.

If you plan to attend, be sure to email me so we can find a spot and time to connect: sue{at}onestreet.org.

Resources – Tactical Urbanism

Tactical urbanism has been gaining popularity through projects that change boring city space into delightful places for people to enjoy such as mini parks, play spaces, art, and of course bicycle infrastructure. Citizens take design into their own hands painting their own bike lanes and crosswalks, coloring intersections, and planting trees. Many projects start as temporary, but are made permanent because of their popularity.

This article offers five distinct ways of reenergizing your city though tactical urbanism.

This recent article shows a clever use of red drink cups to protect bike lanes.

Hot Topics – Silly Anti-Bike Lane Arguments

Bike advocates often face the strangest arguments as they campaign for bike lanes. Watching this video will either make you laugh or cry (or both). Too often these silly arguments convince decision makers to stop bikeway projects. The video offers words of advice as well.

Hot Topics – Aggressive Drivers See Cyclists as ‘Less than Human’ Especially with Helmets

A recent study in Australia found that a disturbing number of people see cyclists as less than human, justifying taunting and even harming them with their vehicles. The researchers noted that bike helmets likely contribute by making the cyclists seem different. Read more in this recent post to the Bike Helmet Blog.
